The Coffin Drop
Coffin Drop
I did not know what to expect from Kendrick’s show. Over the months I truly thought he was not going to perform “Not like us”. As time passed, freestyles dropped. Lawsuits have been sent then dropped then sent again. My tune started to change, I went from he won’t perform it to well drake is daring the NFL and Kendrick to do it. So, if I were Kendrick why wouldn’t I? This guy started the beef for real by bringing my family into it. He made it personal. So, let’s get personal. This feud had made a lot of people feel some kind of way.
Take things personal, and to me misunderstand the message from both sides. Does Kendrick just open his mouth and get grammy’s? feels like it! Are all of these to make up for the snub from “Good kid, mad city”. Maybe. But what makes an album or song grammy worthy? I don’t know. The grammy’s have always been controversial for hip hop. Is Drake hip hop? Yes! But do his albums deserve a grammy every year? I don’t know, I have only listened to one of Drake’s albums in full.
“Certified lover boy” I was not to impressed to be honest but if I were a drake fan it is exactly what I wanted from this artist. One of the many things I know is that battle rap can help you and not just hurt you. A battle helped make Nas relevant again. A battle showed that Drake could take on and take down a battle rapper in his own right. Meek Mill, but also when you step in the ring on any given day, it cannot go well for you. Pusha T completely pushed in Drake’s face all while costing him millions of dollars.
This battle was about a person that thought that they were the entire industry vs someone that wanted to just rep the culture in the correct way in his eyes. We are seeing the crash out of one of the biggest artists in music history. Not just suing a label or sending a freestyle where he is trying to snitch on an NBA player for cheating on his wife (supposedly). This battle has divided and confused a culture. Expectations that should not be placed. Accusations that should be denied.
But are never even really mentioned, tribalism is weird, interesting and very on brand. 50 cent revealed a couple of years ago that you have to pay to perform at the Superbowl. So, for the people that are mad that Kendrick did not perform their favorite song. This is not about your personal playlist. You have your apple music or Spotify app for that. This was about a message that the artist wanted to send. Like every single Super Bowl half time show in history.
Have you ever wondered why certain artists at their peak never performed at the big game? Take Outkast, they were asked for and due to restrictions, that were going to be put on them. Andre 3000 declined for the super group, why would anyone pay to have restrictions put on them and be told what to do? Real question. Drake has supposedly turned it down multiple times. Maybe for the same reasons but we will never know, the flame out is still in process.
A unresolved lawsuit and drake seemingly distancing himself from everyone that did not support him publicly. DJ Khalid was the latest, last week Khalid posted a trailer of his new album. in this trailer he is touting about having two drake features on his upcoming album. Well, with one tweet from Drake it seems like that is not the case. Khalid deleted the post from his social media account and has been quiet since. Ironically this is why Rick Ross dissed Drake in the first place.
Because supposedly he would not clear a record for French Montana. We have not heard from him about the situation since it happened. Look at the end of the day, Kendrick paid to do this performance. He paid to put the nail in the coffin, but not on drake’s career. Drake is currently in Australia getting ten million dollars and all sorts of other perks to perform. His career is not over, this is the coffin drop on this beef and 2024. This is the coffin drop of the past 15 years.
